LA CHOUFFE HOUBLON

NOTES: Draft @ Eulogy Belgian Tavern in Philly

APPEARANCE: Hazy pale gold

HEAD: Massive, meringue-like head that lingers like a lazy dog on a sun-drenched porch

LACING: Paints the glass like spackle

NOSE: There aren’t a lot of Belgian IPAs out there and that’s a shame. The nose is absolutely gorgeous. Big, zesty, citrus, grapefruit hops mixed in with biscuity pale malt, spice, farmhouse funk, mustiness, yeast and a touch of alcohol nose-burn.

TASTE: Fruity esters and funky yeast up front that gives way to a cavalcade of hoppiness. Equal proportions of citrus fruits and pine resin wash over a sturdy sea-wall of a clean, grassy, almost pilsner-like malt bill. A drying, astringent alcohol finish wraps things up.

MOUTHFEEL: It’s medium-to-full bodied but with so much carbonation that the mouthfeel is impressively light and smooth.

DRINKABILITY: For such a complex, high-gravity, hoppy, and unusual offering, this sucker goes down pretty easy. A couple of us split a pitcher of the Houblon and it was gone in an eye-blink.

RATING: 3.5 Hops
