Anyone interested in beer and social media is well aware of Untappd, a tech startup service that allows Aleheads to “Check In” to the beers they are drinking, share it with their friends, and earn badges for a wide variety of beer-related accomplishments. Untappd just celebrated its first anniversary, and this week on the podcast I caught up with cofounder and chief technical officer Greg Avola to talk about the service’s tremendous growth and unexpected popularity, their new iPhone and Android apps, the future of beer and technology, and a lot more.

  1. I typically don’t really feel like I’m missing out on anything by not wanting to pay for a smartphone contract, but Untappd is one of those things that make me morose to not be participating on.

  2. It’s a cool service- the most interesting thing right now is how their “micro review” model seems to be gathering a lot more data, especially with new or local beers, as opposed to Beer Advocate and Rate Beer.

    It’s kind of fun to have a roster of the beers you’ve tried as well. Currently right up there with Yelp as my favorite droid apps.
